MEET LUCIA JOYCE, daughter of James Joyce, and eurythmic avant-garde dancer, who wholeheartedly explored new age movement in the 1920s.

Lucia was 21 when she disrupted the Paris scene with her totally unselfconscious performances, 22 when she toured through the South of France with 'Les Six de Rythme et Couleur', a group of spirited and idealistic young artists, both admired and ridiculed for performing in bare feet, DIY costumes and tunics.

Her whole life was a battle of being acknowledged not just as a visionary in her field, but also as an independent artist in her own right. “It’s me who’s the artist." she once declared in exasperation, even though the Paris Times wrote about her “When she reaches her full capacity for rhythmic dancing, James Joyce may yet be known as his daughter’s father.” That never happened – contra to his perceived life of modernity and free spirit, her father and greatest supporter thought it unseemly for a girl to dance on stage, and Lucia quit dancing when she was 32-ish.
